The 2014 IANA Intermodal Expo promoted the use of technology and innovation in an effort to improve intermodal freight transportation efficiency. Among other companies present, GTG Technology Group presented new information that can increase drayage system productivity. GTG Technology Group is a software company dedicated to creating technology useful in providing end-to-end visibility and connectivity.
GTG presented a transportation management system at the Expo, and the group used the opportunity to learn about specific challenges and struggles troubling the freight industry. Attendees representing drayage companies were able to engage in discussions with GTG Technology Group, sparking innovative ideas for the industry. One innovative idea GTG discussed is the use of templates to speed up order entries.
Drayage systems face many challenges. Drayage is a necessity in shipping, but often is not cost-efficient. Containers need to be moved between shipping ports and railway lines and then again from the railway lines to the intended destination. This is a costly process that runs a high risk of products being mishandled. Innovations in the industry could provide shipping companies with options to minimize the number of times containers must change hands. Creating terminals that allow drayage to occur only between the port and the final destination would be highly beneficial.
The IANA Intermodal Expo drew attendees from many parts of the transportation industry, including 3PLs, ocean carriers, railroads, trucking, and technology vendors. The Expo took place on September 22nd and 23rd at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, California.
